Texting to Teach and Teaching to Text: Preliminary Results and Tutorial (Scott Bragg PharmD)

Conclusions: Two sentences that 1) summarize the main findings/interpretation of the study and, 2) provides context by stating main implications of the findings for practice, policy, or research. Purpose: Preferred learning styles for today's students are changing with advances in technology. Text messaging offers a promising teaching tool for medical education. We are conducting a study to evaluate text messages as a teaching tool and wish to disseminate our early findings, discuss challenges we've encountered, and show participants how to do this themselves. Methods: This study is a parallel group, randomized, controlled trial looking at medical student learning with and without text messaging during rural clerkship training. Students randomized to text messages will receive 15 text messages on diabetes management throughout their five-week rotation. Text messages were pre-developed to reinforce important teaching points on diabetes management to better prepare students for clinical practice.
