Innovative Clinical Teaching Methods for Behavioral Science (Daniel S. Felix PhD)

As opposed to traditional classroom education and didactic lectures, teaching in clinical settings allows learners to apply and practice their knowledge and skills. Clinical teaching is particularly helpful in the behavioral sciences where patients often present with complicated and complex biopsychosocial problems, and where good communication skills are essential. In this seminar we presented, discussed, and practiced three clinical teaching methods that we utilize to help learners develop interpersonal communication skills, behavioral counseling skills, and inter-professional collaboration skills. Resources and tools are provided that can be tailored to suit the particular needs of participants' educational settings. We discussed our residents' feedback about these educational activities using data collected from our residency, and shared recommendations and skills for success.
