Cultural Identification and Values Clarification: An Innovative Approach to Resident and Faculty Cultural Competency (Adrienne A. Williams PhD)

There are numerous limitations to cultural competency curricula that aim to educate health care practitioners (HCPs) on specific cultural groups. In reality, cross cultural communication within health care is far more complicated, involving a lattice of various cultures, each contributing a varying amount to knowledge, values, beliefs, and practices in any given situation. A new model is needed to help HCPs identify the true barriers to health, identify cross cultural communication in every patient interaction, and reduce reliance on stereotypes that occur when cultures are addressed in isolation. This session will demonstrate an innovative new approach for resident curriculum and faculty development in cultural competency. This presentation will lead participants through an interactive exercise designed to address the short-comings of existing cultural competency curricula. The exercise teaches participants to identify differences from a bottom-up rather than top-down approach, and improve cross-cultural communication with all patients, rather than just focusing on select cultural groups. Participants will be provided materials so that the exercise may be repeated with their own faculty and/or health care practitioners (HCPs).
