Promoting Primary Care: Three Pillars (John M Boltri MD, FAAFP)

Increasing the number of primary care physicians (PCPs) in underserved areas is crucial to improving national health. Medical schools have been improving the ways they attract, admit, and educate students. In an environment where access to health care is a major issue, a multifaceted approach is necessary to promote careers in primary care. The Three Pillar approach addresses the (1) pipeline, (2) admissions, and (3) medical school experience. Ignoring any of the three pillars will result in a suboptimal outcome. Medical schools with missions to promote primary care must develop programs and interventions to recruit primary care (PC) oriented students to apply, ensure those students get through the admissions process, and provide excellent training with medically underserved populations. A medical student's career trajectory is a product of her life experiences, educational pursuits, and value system. The goal of this presentation is to describe NOEMEDs three pillar approach to increasing PCPs in medically underserved areas and explore other institutions' approaches. Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to: 1. Identify the Three Pillars needed to increase students choosing PC careers and practicing in underserved areas. 2.
