Creating Community-Based Service-Learning Opportunities to Address ACGME Competencies: the Stanford Youth Diabetes Coaching Program (Nancy Morioka-Douglas MD, MPH)

Family medicine residency programs can develop sustainable community based, service learning components to their curricula. An example is the Stanford Youth Diabetes Coaching Program which can be used by any residency program to meet ACGME competencies. In this, residencies from around the country collaborate with public high schools to deliver a "train the trainer" program. We have developed, piloted and evaluated a set of power point presentations, available on the web, that are used by residents to teach high school students to become diabetes self-management coaches for their family members.
