Senior Family Medicine Residents Interest in A Residency Faculty Role (Marcia McGuire)

Family Medicine residency programs across the nation are challenged in recruiting and retaining faculty. One strategy is generating interest in faculty positions early, during residency, though little data exists regarding resident interest in future faculty positions and what impacts interest and how interest might change during residency. Chief residents take on extra responsibilities, and there is little data as to whether this positively or negatively impact interest in taking a residency faculty position in the future. The WWAMI Network is conducting a study to examine residents' interest in and perceptions of residency faculty positions. Residents are surveyed at the start and end of their final year. The study will compare the change in interest across the final residency year and will look for differences between the chief residents and the other senior residents without these added responsibilities. The session will discuss the variables measured in the survey, the literature reviewed, and the anecdotal data of the Network programs' experiences in faculty recruitment and retention, especially of recent graduates. A preliminary look at the results from the first data collection will be reviewed and discussed.
