Preconception Care: Every Woman, Every Time (Daniel Frayne MD)

The US infant mortality rate lags behind the majority of other developed countries, and the maternal mortality rate is rising. Preconception and interconception care has been recommended as the strategy to address these risks. But with 50% of US pregnancies being unplanned, addressing these preconception risks is challenging. Family physicians have a unique opportunity to address women's health including chronic disease management and preconception risk reduction in multiple settings, including pediatric visits. Preconception care is primary care, but new strategies are needed to improve quality and decrease barriers to effective preconception care. This interactive and engaging seminar will present the value and content of preconception care, the case for an "every woman, every time" approach based on a woman's reproductive life plan, and utilize common patient scenarios to demonstrate and practice incorporating preconception care into routine primary care office visits. Innovative strategies and resources such as the National Preconception Health and Health Care Initiative's Preconception Health toolkit, the One Key Question Initiative, and the IMPLICIT model of maternal assessments at well child visits will be highlighted.
