Taking an Unwelcome Guest Along for a Visit

By Jan Chait I went to Texas to get away from winter but, as it turned out, I took winter with me. The cold came along. The ice came along. Even some snow followed me there. The daughter of the house had come home for the weekend, but had to leave early to get back to campus in Waco before the worst stuff hit. She later sent video of herself scraping a passel of ice off her car. All kinds of creatures were seeking warmth. Even Thor, a Siberian Husky, stayed inside for the most part and one lone scorpion tried to sneak in to soak up some heat. Thor, who had never met me before, greeted me as soon as Nancy and I pulled into the garage and I opened my car door — by giving me doggie kisses. On the mouth. Ewwwwww! I do not like doggie kisses. Anywhere. But that's not the worst Thor did: He also attempted to eat my Dexcom continuous glucose monitor transmitter. The backstory is that it fell off overnight and I put it on the table next to the bed. I then made the mistake of leaving the bedroom door open when I got up on my last morning there. A little later, Nancy caught Thor chewing on something and it wasn't his bone. It was the sensor bed that the transmitter fits into — and the transmitter was missing. We looked. On floors and tabletops, under beds and rugs. We dug through Thor's toy box. Nothing. The decision was made to take Thor to the vet, just to be on the safe side.
