Methamphetamine‐Induced Enhancement of Hippocampal LTP Is Modulated by NMDA and GABA Receptors in the Shell–Accumbens

This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. Schematic hypothetical model of polysynaptic effects of NAc in modulation of METH‐induced hippocampal plasticity. By blocking dopamine uptake and increasing dopamine efflux, METH increases dopamine concentration in the DAT containing brain regions (striatum and hippocampus). METH modifies hippocampal synaptic plasticity by affecting dopamine neurotransmission in the reward system. According reciprocal connectivity through the hippocampus‐NAc‐VTA‐loop, reducing the inhibitory GABAergic tone of NAc by AP5 or Muscimol reverses the effect of METH on hippocampal synaptic transmission. Degree of activity is represented by thickness of the arrows.
