Getting Under Your Skin

People are sharing their stories. Thanks to the internet, these personal narratives can be accessed instantaneously across the globe. Reading, hearing, and watching the stories of others helps close the gaps between us, formed by private experiences. But, let’s take it one step further. Let’s mix disconnected communities and fuse them through a process of writing and sharing stories through performance. Vicki Bello, Cyndi Amaya, David Daza and I are launching this concept at  LaGuardia Community College.  Women veterans and civilian women will participate in a writing/performance workshop. Under the guidance of Cyndi Amaya, a writer and professor who teaches in LeGuardia’s Veterans Program, women will write stories investigating the impact of the military upon their lives. These stories will be performed by male active duty/veterans. These performances will be directed by Stephan Wolfert, the gifted actor who created DeCrut, an acting workshop designed to help veterans transition home.  Stephan brings veritas and gravitas to this work as an artist, a veteran, and a healer. I will be a civilian participant. So…I am embedded and will report from the healing arts front. The men will perform the piece, (her) VOICE,  on May 3  as a part of  LaGuardia’s Veterans Appreciation Week.  The performance will be followed by a Q & A between the audience, the performers, and  the women whose stories were shared.
