A Change Agent’s Journey to Meditation

Mindfulness and meditation are hot topics today and as disruptive women this can be a stealth but potent weapon in our professional missions to affect change.   The key is knowledge about the power of meditation as a change-agent and leadership tool and then, of course, practicing meditation consistently. The reality is that many of us find it hard to meditate, despite the research showing it’s beneficial physiological, emotional effects. It refreshes us, helps us settle into what’s happening now, reduces our blood pressure, and makes us wiser, more alert and calmer at the same time. But if you’re still looking to justify spending time meditating, try this one: Meditation gives you an edge as a change-maker. While it’s hard to quantify the business value of spending 15 minutes a day in silence, doing nothing, the change-agent effect results from resisting the urge of that counterproductive follow through. For example, when you want to blurt something out in a meeting to get your point across but know you’d be better off listening.  At least just enough listening to be able to effectively empower others to achieve your mission-critical goals.  Or avoiding confrontation because you’re not centered or calm enough to reduce a negative emotional impact, on you or your colleague.  Or even, losing sleep over a conversation that keeps you awake til 3 am, leaving you with jumbled thinking just in time for a major client presentation.
