BMA Q and A: priorities, the patient symposium and the junior doctors dispute

  BMA patient liaison group chair Catherine Macadam answers your questions What are the BMA patient liaison group’s priorities for the year ahead? This year, the PLG is focusing on two main areas of work around patient engagement. In October, we hosted a meeting on self-care and health literacy for children and young people. At this event, young people told us what they would like doctors to do differently to help them be more engaged with, and better able to manage, their own health. We are also continuing to monitor the development of emerging new models of care, including the devolution and integration of care. Our aim is to see how patient and public engagement is being used to inform and shape the way health and care services are going to be delivered in future. We also continue to build relationships between the BMA and patient organisations.   Can you tell us about the purpose of the forthcoming patient symposium in May? Our symposium in May will bring together colleagues from across the BMA, medical royal colleges and patient organisations to debate the question: ‘Patient engagement — why bother?’ We will be hearing stories about how patient engagement has made a crucial difference, and considering what the various parties can do differently to get the maximum benefit from ‘fully engaged patients’.   How will the PLG be inputting into the work of the branch of practice committees this year?
