Recruitment campaign must be backed by action, says BMA

A campaign to encourage junior doctors to live and work in Scotland must be backed by real action to make jobs more attractive, the BMA has warned. The Scottish Government campaign, #juniordocscot, includes short films following trainee doctors working in Scotland, and aims to highlight positive aspects of training, working and living north of the border. It will run until 9 March, which is the deadline for trainees across the UK to apply for specialty training places. Scotland’s chief medical officer Catherine Calderwood, pictured, who features in the campaign’s main video, says Scotland offers great career opportunities. She said: ‘I am extremely proud of the strong record we have of delivering high-quality training, as well as our fantastic academic research and development opportunities.’   Recruitment efforts BMA Scotland junior doctors committee chair Chris Sheridan said: ‘The BMA has made repeated calls for more to be done to fill vacant trainee places in Scotland, so the Scottish Government’s decision to step up recruitment efforts is a welcome one. ‘However, for those efforts to talk up the prospect of working in Scotland to succeed, Scotland also genuinely needs to be as attractive a place for junior doctors to work as possible. ‘Every trainee post that goes unfilled in Scotland creates a gap that needs to be covered by other medical staff, so it really is vital that everything possible is done to address this iss...
