EU referendum: BMA plans briefing

  Doctors and medical students can inform themselves of the potentially huge implications of the EU referendum on the UK and medical profession via a BMA document. The BMA will be releasing a briefing for members on the ‘momentous’ issue of the UK’s future membership of the EU, following the announcement at the weekend that a referendum will take place on 23 June. It followed days of negotiation by prime minister David Cameron in Brussels to agree a deal giving the UK 'special status’ within the 28-member state EU. In the document on the referendum, which will be published shortly, BMA council chair Mark Porter (pictured) says: ‘The upcoming referendum on the UK’s future membership of the EU is a momentous issue whose result could have huge implications for both the nation and indeed the medical profession. ‘The impact — intentional or unintended, positive and negative — of EU policy and legislation on the UK’s medical profession and the health of the nation is significant, if not always immediately apparent.’   Vital role Dr Porter adds that the BMA has continued to ensure that members’ voices are heard beyond the UK’s shores via its European office, which opened in 1994 as the first EU office of a national medical association.
