Risk Assessment and Perioperative Care for Patients with Renal or Liver Disease

Publication date: Available online 20 February 2016 Source:Hospital Medicine Clinics Author(s): Kara J. Mitchell, Maya NarayananTeaser Chronic kidney disease and cirrhosis are common in patients anticipating surgery. Chronic kidney disease leads to increased operative morbidity and mortality that are largely caused by associated cardiovascular disease, for which these patients are at high risk. The single greatest risk factor for the development of acute kidney injury around the time of surgery is underlying chronic kidney disease. The excess perioperative morbidity and mortality related to cirrhosis and hepatitis is caused by many factors. Elective surgery is generally contraindicated in patients with Child-Pugh class C cirrhosis, but may be considered for class A or B.
