Stavudine

Stavudine, a synthetic antiretroviral agent, is a dideoxynucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor. It is an analogue of thymidine, a naturally occurring pyrimidine nucleoside. It differs from thymidine in the 2'-3' double bond on the deoxyribose moiety and in the replacement of the 3'-hydroxyl group with hydrogen. The absence of a free 3'-hydroxyl group results in the inability of stavudine to form phosphodiester linkages at this position. [#]
