Pol Arch Med Wewn. 2016 Jan 22; Authors: Mosleh W, Farkouh ME Abstract Over the past two decades, extensive research has assessed the use of traditional NSAIDs, and the newer cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor drugs in the treatment of chronic pain syndromes. Proper NSAID use has been a subject of significant debate, bringing together multidisciplincary researchers and clinicians to discuss the risks and benefits of these therapies. Current guidelines discussing the proper use of NSAIDs do not address the issue of the risks of COX-2 selective NSAIDs and ns-NSAIDs at both the gastrointestinal and cardiovascular systems of either class of drugs with low-dose aspirin. Accordingly, a multidisciplinary expert group organized to review current evidence, with the aim of developing statements devoted guide clinicians in making evidence-based and individualized selections of NSAIDs, as detailed in the consensus study. This review will discuss and summarize the current and most recent evidence on this topic, to give an insight for the most effective and safest therapeutic options, thus preventing serious adverse cardiovascular and gastrointestinal events.
