Alternative Donors: Cord Blood for Adults

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a curative treatment for patients with hematological diseases. The probability of finding a human leucocyte antigen (HLA) identical donor among family members is around 25% and 30% that of having a full matched unrelated donor in the registry. Patients in need may also benefit of a HLA mismatched HSCT either from an haploidentical donors or from umbilical cord blood (UCB). Much has been learned about UCBT since the first human cord blood transplant (UCBT) was performed back in 1988.
