Issue Information

Development and morphology of the middle ear. The middle ear comprises the ear ossicle(s) and tympanic membrane. Although the jaw and middle ear bones in mammals and diapsids (modern reptiles and birds) are morphologically homologous, the tympanic membrane is attached to non‐homologous elements between them, suggesting that the tympanic membrane evolved independently in the mammalian and diapsid lineages. Further details can be seen in the article by Takechi et al. in this issue.
