Imaging of foot trauma

Traumatic injuries of the foot are very common, especially in high velocity, polytrauma cases. Both direct forces, including crush injuries and axial loading, and indirect forces, such as sudden rotational forces, can result in devastating injuries with long-term negative sequela. Fractures and dislocations of the hindfoot, midfoot, and forefoot will be illustrated in this review article. Injury etiology, diagnostic evaluation, management options, and potential outcomes of these injuries will be discussed, and the importance of cross sectional imaging, particularly mutli-detector computed tomography, will be emphasized.
