Foreword

Heart failure (HF) is being diagnosed with increased frequency. By 2030 more than 8 million people are expected to be diagnosed with HF in the USA and the total direct cost will have correspondingly increased from $21 billion to $53 billion. About half of the patients have “preserved” left ventricular ejection fraction (HFpEF). The incidence of HFpEF is increasing by 10% per decade when compared to HF in those with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). The outcome of patients with HFrEF is associated with improving mortality due to treatment; but in those with HFpEF, treatments have not showed such beneficial effects.
