Ultrasound-guided vascular access

Publication date: Available online 8 December 2015 Source:Journal of Indian College of Cardiology Author(s): Prem Chand Gupta, Pradeep Burli Vascular access is an integral part of patient care in hospitals. It may be required for diagnostic angiography, for endovascular interventions, for patient monitoring and for administration of fluids, antibiotics and nutrition. Conventional methods of access based on anatomical landmarks and vessel palpation are associated with higher failure rates, more attempts and higher rate of complications. Real time ultrasound imaging can provide higher success rate, faster access and significantly lower complication rates. It should be considered as standard of care in vascular access.
