Os vesalianum – A confounding diagnosis

Publication date: Available online 23 October 2015 Source:Apollo Medicine Author(s): Mukesh Tiwari, Vikram Khanna, Umamaheshwar Kodide, Raju Vaishya A 42-year-old, diabetic patient presented with history of pain in right little toe and swelling of right foot following trivial trauma the day before. X-ray right foot revealed what was thought to be base of the fifth metatarsal fracture. There was no tenderness, hence it was thought that it might be an accessory ossicle. To confirm the diagnosis, an X-ray of left foot was done, which also showed a small smooth edged bone lying adjacent to base of the fifth metatarsal, which was similar to that found in right foot and hence, our diagnosis of os vesalianum was confirmed. It is important to differentiate and keep this diagnosis in mind whenever managing cases without a clear clinical presentation.
