Genetic drift: A case of abuse

In this essay, an infant with multiple fractures is removed from the custody of her parents because of suspected child abuse. Subsequently studies reveal that the child has osteogenesis imperfecta, type III. Though the child is eventually returned to the mother's custody, her entire first year has been spent in foster care. The essay illustrates the toll taken on families when a diagnosis of OI is missed or delayed. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
