Gastric cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the world, with 952,000 new cases diagnosed in 2012.1 Although the incidence of gastric cancer is continuously decreasing, about 75% of cases die of the disease, representing the third leading cause of cancer death worldwide.1 Of interest, gastric cancer incidence shows remarkable international regional variation, with almost two-thirds of all cases occurring in Asia.
