Frank Caruso

DirectorFrank Caruso began responding to disasters in 1974, as a young man on a mission to serve, when he joined the West Babylon Fire Department in New York as a volunteer fire fighter and paramedic.  After rising through the ranks as Rescue Lieutenant and Fire Captain, he decided to leave his career as a science teacher and attend school at the State University of New York, Stony Brook to become a Physician Assistant (PA).  Mr. Caruso has maintained his fire fighting and paramedic skills and certifications by active membership in two fire departments: Clemmons Fire Department and Yaupon Beach Fire Department, both in North Carolina. He holds numerous certifications in fire fighting, rescue related activities, and as an instructor.    As a PA, Mr. Caruso advanced his expertise in treating injured patients while working in busy inner city emergency rooms, health maintenance organizations, and in rural underserved environments in New York City.  In 1994, he was offered a position at a large teaching hospital as Chief PA for an orthopedic group at a major teaching hospital, Wake Forest Baptist Health, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In order to maintain his paramedic skills he joined the Special Operations Response Team, a local group of volunteer professional s from fire, police, rescue, and military backgrounds that focus on helping  communities in times of disaster, both locally and throughout the state of North Carolina.
