Preface

Despite remarkable progress in improving the health of children worldwide during the past 25 years, there are areas within global health where progress has been much slower. Surgical care of children is perhaps one of the best examples. In many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) surgical care of children continues to be viewed as a non-essential component of child health programs. In the absence of surgical care, congenital anomalies go unrepaired, treatable injuries result in lifelong disabilities, and children die of easily correctable surgical problems, e.g.
