Blogs and Tweets, Texting and Friending: Social Media and Online Professionalism in Health Care by Sandra M. DeJong. Sandra M. DeJong, MD, is a medical educator interested in how digital technology impacts the medical profession. She states that her new book is an “effort to focus on broad-based concepts of the importance of professionalism in medicine and the ways in which professionalism is at risking the face of the scope, speed, and permanence of digital technology.” This book begins by defining professionalism then summarizes the most common mistakes made online by professionals in the following areas: liabity and maintaining the standard of care; confidentiality and security of patient information; patient and practitioner privacy; libel; conflict of interest; academic honesty, particularly plagiarism; mandated reporting and safety issues; netiquette. Dr DeJong concludes that:  “The importance of health-care professionals demonstrating respect for boundaries, privacy, confidentiality, and other tenets of professionalism is and will be extraordinarily high. If we cannot find a way to manage digital technology professionally today, we may not be prepared for the brave new world of tomorrow.”  Read this book
