Simultaneous Occurrence of Chiari Type I Malformation and Classic Medulloblastoma

We present here a rare case of an adult patient with Chiari type I malformation and classic medulloblastoma. A 22-year-old woman underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) because of a variety of symptoms. Results from this MRI led to the diagnosis of Chiari type I malformation. Two years later, she was readmitted to the hospital with complaints of gait disturbance. She received another MRI that showed herniation of the cerebellar tonsils and a tumor mass in the right cerebellar hemisphere. Microsurgical treatment was performed for both the bilateral herniated cerebellar tonsils and tumor excision. Postoperative pathologic examination confirmed that the mass was indeed a classic medulloblastoma. Importantly, Chiari type I malformation and medulloblastoma rarely occur in the same individual. Thus, the case we present here is a unique occurrence that warrants further investigation.
