Why Infant Formula Samples Pose a Risk to Health Care Providers, Hospitals, and Patients

ABSTRACT Distribution of infant formula samples to new mothers prior to hospital discharge has been an engrained practice on maternity units since the early 20th century. Although appearing to be innocuous, this practice is fraught with potential unwanted side effects of which patients and providers are unaware. Receipt of formula samples by breastfeeding mothers is a marketing tactic that adversely affects breastfeeding duration and exclusivity and places the nurse at risk for responsibility for adverse outcomes.
