Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma and related entities: Epidemiology, clinical and histological features and basic science overview.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) represents only a percentage of the so-called non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC), but it is considered the second most common human malignancy after basal cell carcinoma (BCC). In contrast to the majority of BCC cases, cSCC accounts for significant morbidity and mortality, representing the majority of metastases and deaths related to NMSC. Several cSCC types are described with a distinct group of cSCC high-risk variants being associated with significantly elevated risk of local recurrence, metastases and death.
