MRI-based methods to detect placental and fetal brain abnormalities in utero

Placental insufficiency is characterized by inadequate blood flow to the placenta causing the fetus to receive inadequate amounts of nutrients and oxygen, affecting fetal development while in utero. An early onset of placental insufficiency places fetuses at 40% higher risk of developing brain damage, lung dysfunction and gastrointestinal problems (Keswani et al., 2002). Unfortunately, placental insufficiency doesn’t have any outwards symptoms. Early diagnosis and treatment is vital for the health of both mother and baby.
