Modular drug delivery systems for personalized oral dosage forms.

Modular drug delivery systems for personalized oral dosage forms. Recent Pat Drug Deliv Formul. 2015 Jun 11; Authors: Colombo P Abstract A drug delivery platform based on a modular dosage forms have been developed at University of Parma (1). Release modules consisted in cylindrical tablets or matrices, having a concave and a convex base to be assembled by friction interlocking in a firm drug delivery system. The interlocking was obtained by forcing the convex base of one module into the concavity of another one. Modules have been constructed with several different matrix materials and compositions (2-3). The typical diameter of the module was 7.4 mm and the number of modules assembled was six in case of high doses drugs. In this case the assembled system could be introduced in a rigid capsule size 00. The modular approach makes possible to administer different drugs at the same time at different rates and in a selected site (4). The pharmaco-therapy of chronic pathologies stressed the relevance of multiple drug use. In these situations, the concomitant administration of drugs in different dosage forms is requested for efficaciously tackling the disease. The assembled module technology is a response to this need since the dosage form includes in one administration form (polypill) all the substances required by the patient (5). Different drugs administered in one pharmaceutical dosage form improve the compliance of the patient, since i...
