Trophic effects of adipose derived stem cells on Langerhans islets viability –Review
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) 347 million people worldwide have diabetes and, in 2030, this complex disease will be the 7th leading cause of death (1). 10% of the diabetic population have type 1 diabetes and, despite the administration of exogenous insulin, the mortality in this group occurs in younger ages range when compared to non diabetic subjects(2). In Brazil, there are almost 1, 2 million of type 1 diabetic patients whose survival and overall health could be improved by new therapies providing insulin sufficiency and glycemic control (3).
