Publication date: Available online 8 May 2015 Source:Gynecology and Minimally Invasive Therapy Author(s): Meng-Hsing Wu , Kuei-Yang Hsiao , Shaw-Jenq Tsai Inflammation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of endometriosis. Infiltration of peritoneal macrophages and the local proinflammatory mediators in peritoneal microenvironment affect ovarian function and pelvic anatomy leading to the symptoms and signs of women with endometriosis. The identification of a non-invasive marker for endometriosis will facilitate early diagnosis and treatment of this disease. This review provides an overview of local microenvironmental inflammation and systemic inflammation biomarkers in endometriosis.
